Almost Six, The Guns Are Gone

Almost six years and counting
from the date the helicopters
the tanks, APC's and Police
came and left our territory

They came armed to kill us
to show us Mohawks how to live
they wanted us to believe them
to submit to their ways
but as a people, determined to live
we did not submit, to their ways

Our people stood up, armed and fought
we fought for our mother, our people, our dignity
it was our mother who we cared about
not bingo, not cigarettes, not anything else
but the media made it seem so
as the nation came together

The little green men, scared to death of us
as we were willing to die, to keep out mother
we put our lives on the line, had a cause
the men in green only had orders
they had no cause, no truth, no dignity
only commanding orders, and the use of machines

The Mohawk, first time in a century
showed serious power and determination
will to be the strongest people
defending its mother, and our people

As for the tiny Nation we are
we never asked for war, at all
nor did we ask to have our land taken
as the use of the gun was the only means left
Though I hope this never happens again
because surely people will die
