- Iroquois people have long been known for our
equality and treatment of our people. We have been known to have influenced
the feminist movement. In doing so Iroquois people still hold many of these
values people have long talked about since the coming of the boats from
across the sea. Many Iroquois people still hold a deep respect for our
people, our women, mothers, brothers and many others in our giant family.
- I today believe we need to reconnect and begin
once again to respect the women of the Iroquois Confederacy. The woman
was the first to recognize the power and goodness in the idea of a great
Confederacy. The woman is the one who brought us all into this world. She
is also the one who looks at us at night, in the sky and we walk upon our
mothers back everyday.
- I believe many of my people have to get off their
asses and start putting respect back into their words, and actions. They
need to live the words respect, feel it and continually learn its meaning.
Until the day I give myself back to the earth I will continue to learn
the words respect, and this is no excuse to continue to disrespect.
- The following statement says what I feel
should be true in present day Iroquoia:
- "To his Creator he gives thanks for our
women who bear us children in His Likeness, our women who must endure the
pains of giving birth, who must endure the sadness of he loved ones' hurts,
who must endure the great loss of a loved-one's departure to the Spirit
World, who must remain strong in their teachings and their wisdom!"
(A Warriors Prayer, by David McDonald)
- I think he states one thing I could not
have said better myself. I take thes words and use them as my road
map in life, constantly learning the word respect.
- Certainly I hope people will think about
these words. I hope they will cross there minds in there everyday
lives and think about their actions. Maybe if all Iroquois people thought
about these words we wouldn't have domestic violence today.
